Exceptional year for Balliol Outreach

Tuesday 24 February 2026

Balliol is delighted to report a record year for its outreach initiatives, with 141 Oxford offers made to participants in our programmes in the most recent admissions round – a 20% increase on last year. Of these, 21 offers were made by Balliol.

These offers stem from participation in Balliol’s key outreach programmes, which cover a large range of subjects, from Archaeology and Anthropology to Physics and Philosophy. Our tutors report that, in recent years, the quality of applicants received has been exceptional: we are able to fill our places easily and recommend high quality applicants to other colleges.

Key figures

  • Record offers were made across several subjects: 18 offers for History, 15 for English, 13 for Modern Foreign Languages, 12 for English and Engineering, and 11 for Chemistry.
  • Of the 40 participants on the Floreat Humanities Programme, 30 applied to Oxford and 16 received offers – an outstanding success rate of 53%. Four of these offers were made by Balliol (two for Law, one for English, and one for History).
  • We increased the number of Try Before You Buy Days from four to six. These events, which allow participants to experience tutorials first-hand, were associated with a rise from 26 offers in 2024 to 48 offers in 2025, most of which came from students from under-represented groups.
  • Balliol received 1,273 applications in 2025 – nearly 100 more than the previous year, and a significant increase from fewer than 800 applications a decade ago.
  • Balliol worked directly with nearly 70% of the UK schools that sent applicants.

Outreach is a collaborative endeavour

While outreach activity is led by the Outreach Officer, its success reflects the collective efforts of the entire Balliol community, including the generous support of Old Members.

Taster Days are led by Tutors, who provide subject based lectures and demonstration interviews. Graduate students deliver tutorials on Try Before You Buy Days and contribute to the Insight Talk series, sharing their research specialisms. Undergraduates serve as outstanding ambassadors for the College, offering tours, answering questions about their courses and student life, and helping to showcase the College during Open Days. Outreach at Balliol is truly a shared endeavour – one of which the College can be rightly proud.

Variety of opportunities for prospective applicants

We are often asked why we provide so many different types of outreach activities. The answer is simple: prospective applicants are at different stages in their academic journeys.

Some students, already confident and motivated when they start Year 12, apply to our sustained contact programmes early in the academic year. These highly committed participants attend regular sessions that mirror undergraduate study and prepare them for the academic demands of Oxford.

Others are still exploring potential degree subjects. Over 1,500 students sign up each year to our Insight into Science series, attending as many talks as they wish across a vast range of subjects. Many also join the Insight into Maths series. For many participants, these online talks provide the initial spark of inspiration that motivates them to apply to in-person events at Balliol.

For students who begin considering Oxford later in Year 12, Taster Days offer immersive subject experiences, including lectures, workshops, and demonstration interviews based on undergraduate course content.

Alongside these flagship programmes, we deliver online talks and workshops, host schools visits, collaborate with faculties on departmental and University open days, and continually develop digital resources to support prospective students’ intellectual curiosity.

Looking ahead

Despite this success, demand continues to grow. Teachers, schools, and individual students increasingly seek further engagement, and gaps in our provision remain.

We would like to develop a bespoke programme for Year 11 students progressing from the Discovery Programme, helping them to understand the demands of A-Level and degree-level study. Demand also exceeds supply for teacher engagement initiatives, where teachers work with graduates to deepen subject knowledge and enhance teaching strategies. In addition, we aim to strengthen provision for younger students beginning their secondary school education.

We are deeply grateful to the many Old Members and friends whose continued support has enabled the growth and success of these programmes. This year’s record results demonstrate the transformative impact of sustained outreach, and we hope they affirm the value and long-term significance of your support.
