Balliol has a wide and varied alumni network, which includes people working in different industries all over the world. Our career mentoring sessions connect current Balliol students with Balliol alumni to discuss their career options and chosen industry.
If you apply for one of these sessions you will be offered a one-to-one meeting with an alumnus or alumna who has experience in the field of work you are interested in. You can take this opportunity to ask how they entered the industry, what they do in their role and for advice on your own career. This experience is a great way to learn invaluable knowledge from industry insiders and start to build your professional network. Currently, all meetings will take place by video call.
To apply for this scheme, you will need to complete the application form, which can be accessed through the link below using your Oxford Single Sign On. We ask you to include:
- a CV
- a cover letter, addressed to Richard Norman, Careers Fellow and Development Director, Balliol College, Oxford OX1 3BJ
- a short personal reference from your Balliol tutor — your Personal Tutor (undergraduates) or College Adviser (graduates) — or if they prefer, they can send one directly to development.office@balliol.ox.ac.uk.
The Oxford University Careers Service has many great resources on how to write applications, including web pages on how to write a CV and how to write a cover letter (including samples at the foot of each page).
Once you have completed the application form, the Development Office will be in touch within two weeks to discuss your application further. If your application is successful, we will match you with an alumnus/a who has experience in a field you are interested in as a career, and we will help to arrange a meeting between you both. If your application is unsuccessful, we are able to give you feedback on why it has been rejected and you are welcome to re-apply again at a later stage.
If you successfully secure a one-to-one meeting with an alumnus/a we expect you to commit to certain requirements. Please read these student commitments for career mentoring sessions carefully before you apply and make sure you are happy with the commitments required.
Please log in with your Oxford Single Sign On (SSO). When prompted, enter your Balliol email address into the Microsoft address box and then use your SSO to sign in.
