This exhibition will investigate the growing interest in mountaineering from the 18th century onwards when scientists and natural philosophers began their explorations. Through exhibits from Balliol’s historic collections and items borrowed from the Alpine Club, it will uncover the stories of Balliol people involved in some important expeditions, scientific innovations and adventures in the mountains.
Dr Amanda Vincent, Professor in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, University of British Columbia, will give a lecture entitled ‘From Seahorse Sex to Global Policy Change.’ The Dawkins Prize is endowed by a generous donation from the family of Professor Richard Dawkins FRS (1959 and Honorary Fellow).
