Many congratulations to three Balliol people who have been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2024.
Ruth Sloan (Balliol 1998), Deputy Director, Legacy, Ireland Office, has been awarded Officer of the Order of British Empire (OBE) for services to Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Matthew Westerman (Balliol 1983, Foundation Fellow), Lately Chair, Imperial War Museums, has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Museums and to Cultural Heritage.
Professor Freddie Hamdy (Professorial Fellow), Nuffield Professor of Surgery and Head, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, has been awarded a CBE for services to Surgical and Cancer Sciences.
Professor Hamdy commented: ‘I am delighted and humbled to receive this award in recognition of decades of work with wonderful colleagues and teams in Surgical and Cancer Sciences. It is this cornerstone of patient centered multidisciplinary approach to surgical research and innovation which is being recognised. I hope this will inspire new generations of talented colleagues to not just reach what they perceive they can, but what they think they cannot.’
