How should one seat guests at the dining table? Andrei Constantinescu (Balliol 2017) came up with the answer in a paper that won Best Paper Award at the Web and Internet Economics 19th International Conference, WINE 2023, in Shanghai.
Andrei Constantinescu took his undergraduate and master’s degree in computer science (MCompSci) at Balliol and is currently pursuing a PhD with the Distributed Computing (DISCO) group at ETH Zürich.
His paper, ‘Stable Dinner Party Seating Arrangements’, was co-authored with Damien Berriaud and Roger Wattenhofer. It looks into the practical problem of finding a stable dinner party seating arrangement when some of the guests have preferences about whom they would or would not like to sit next to, and provides a solution that ensures that no two guests feel the need to change seats.
