New recycling bins for writing instruments and batteries

Tuesday 08 November 2022

Balliol members now have two more opportunities to recycle, with recycling buckets both for writing instruments and for batteries.

Writing Instruments Recycling Programme recyling bucket

Writing instruments recycling buckets have been installed in all three lodges (Broad Street, Holywell Manor and Jowett Walk) and also in the corridor outside the JCR. In these buckets you can dispose of pens, mechanical pencils, fountain pens, ink cartridges, markers, highlighters and correction instruments from any brand. The buckets are from the Writing Instruments Free Recycling Programme run by Terracycle. Once collected, the writing materials will be cleaned and separated by material type, and the fibres and plastics recycled into raw products that manufacturers can use to make new products.

Buckets for recycling any form of battery are in the JCR corridor and at the Holywell Manor Lodge.

The installation of these bins is an initiative by Balliol’s Climate and Biodiversity Committee, established earlier in the year. Chaired by Climate Fellow Derek Moulton and including representatives from the JCR and MCR, the committee is looking at a number of issues — including the College’s gas consumption, water use and waste — and looking for ways Balliol to reduce carbon impacts in whatever way it can.
