Completion of the Master’s Field Project

Thursday 17 June 2021

With the completion of the Master’s Field Project, Balliol has splendid new facilities for students and other members of College.

More than 200 new student rooms have been built, in ten accommodation blocks grouped around a pavilion at the edge of the Master’s Field (Balliol’s sportsground). The development means that Balliol is able to offer undergraduate students accommodation for all the years of their course and has 60 more rooms for graduate students than it had previously. The new buildings also include accommodation for Fellows, including a flat for the visiting Eastman Professor, and a pavilion, changing room and squash court.

For details and photographs, see these pages:

Work began on the development in 2018. Phase One was completed in 2019. The buildings in Phase Two were handed over to the College last month, and the new rooms will be furnished over the summer, in time for student occupation in Michaelmas Term 2021.

The project was managed by property consultancy Bidwells, designed by Níall McLaughlin Architects and built by BAM Construction. It is hoped that, subject to the easing Covid-19 restrictions, it will be possible to hold a formal opening ceremony later in the year.
