Balliol Benefactors’ Picnic

Friday 20 August 2021

For our first in-person alumni event since the pandemic began, we invited some of Balliol’s most loyal supporters for an informal picnic in College on 31 July. We were delighted that despite some challenges, not least the inclement weather, over 100 Old Members and their families were able to join us – all longstanding, UK-based members of Balliol’s 1263 Society

Greeted by the Master, guests were served drinks in the Fellows’ Garden before rain forced a retreat to the Buttery. Nothing daunted, everyone either stayed in the Buttery or took their picnic boxes into Hall, and over sandwiches, strawberries and cake chatted to old friends and new (‘I caught up with people I haven’t seen — oh gosh — for 25 years at least’, said one), as well as catching up with College staff on Balliol news.

Many also joined a tour of the new buildings at the Master’s Field, which earned enthusiastic comments:
• ‘Beautiful and practical. Lucky 21st cent. students!’
• ‘We could see all the thought which has gone into the architecture, design and fit out. The site has been developed to fit in well with the Master’s Field sports pitch. It’s a major achievement to have finished the project … and to be in a position to offer college accommodation to students throughout their time at Balliol.’
• ‘The Master’s Field … really has added hugely to the attractions of College to those lucky enough to be arriving over coming years.’

We are grateful to everyone for their perseverance in the rain, ‘a great day out despite the rotten weather’ being one of many favourable comments. It was wonderful to be able to thank our supporters in person, though it was a shame that restrictions meant we were only able to extend the invitation to a fraction of those to whom we owe so much gratitude. Fingers crossed that next year we can invite many more benefactors, including the whole of the 1263 Society to join us!

Meanwhile we very much look forward to more in-person events. The next event, open to all Old Members, is the Balliol Society Weekend on Saturday 18 September: see more details and book here
