Diana Berruezo-Sánchez (Career Development Fellow in Spanish) has been awarded a John Fell Small Grant for the organisation of an international and interdisciplinary research workshop, From Presence to Action: Black Africans’ Agency in Early Modern Spain.

The aim of the workshop is to explore the agency of black Africans living in 16th- and 17th-century Spain by identifying early modern sources and providing a multidisciplinary definition of agency.

The John Fell Fund is ‘intended to foster creativity and a proactive approach to research opportunities in all subject areas, particularly interdisciplinary fields’. It is an internal research fund supported by Oxford University Press, named after the 17th-century ‘father’ of the modern Press, Dean of Christ Church, Vice-Chancellor and Bishop of Oxford.
