- Core subject area: Organic and biological chemistry.
- Teaching: Undergraduate tutorials covering the organic chemistry syllabus.
- Former research interests: Organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, the use of combinatorial and chemical/biochemical techniques to develop and assay new drugs, particularly inhibitors of enzymes to provide therapies against specific diseases. Previous work included the discovery and synthesis of new inhibitors of elastase (against emphysema), HIV protease (against AIDS) and dihydrofolate reductase (against malaria). Dr Quarrell is no longer an active researcher, having given up practical work to focus on teaching.
- Other: Co-founder and organiser of the Oxford Café Scientifique, a forum dedicated to the public understanding and enjoyment of science.
