Balliol Day Nursery: First Aid

  • All of our full time, permanent staff attend Ofsted approved Paediatric First Aid training. This training is kept up to date and valid.
  • A First Aid box, provided by the college nurse, containing items that are suitable for use with children is always available. This is checked regularly by the person responsible for Health and Safety, to ensure that stocks are maintained. The college Nurse will check or replace the box annually. The first Aid box is a specific for purpose bag, which is easily identified and marked as First Aid. It is located in the children’s bathroom, out of the reach of the children.
  • Any accidents or injuries to children, staff or visitors whilst on nursery premises, must be recorded in the nursery accident book.
  • Details of how, where, when and to whom the accident happened must be recorded by the member of staff who saw and dealt with the injury, along with any treatment given.
  • Parents/guardians will be informed about any accident or injury when they collect their child and asked to read and sign the accident book.
  • In order to preserve confidentiality, incidents will be recorded one to a page.
  • Accident forms will be kept securely until the child reaches the age of 21 years.
  • When an incident is recorded in the book, a pink sticker will also be placed on the child’s peg. This will notify the parent/guardians that they need to, ‘ask to see the accident book’. This is a safeguard to ensure that reporting to parents is not missed, during busy hand over periods.
  • If a child sustains a more serious injury whilst at nursery, the manager or deputy will inform the parents/guardians by telephone.
  • In cases of more severe injury, or when there is any element of doubt, the manager or deputy will request that parents/guardians collect their children and advise them to seek further medical advice from a doctor.
  • In cases of serious injury where it is necessary to transfer the child to hospital immediately or phone for the emergency services, parents/guardians will be contacted as soon as possible. Parents/guardians are required to be contactable at all times.
  • In cases of severe injury Ofsted and the Area Child Protection agency will be notified within 14 days.
  • During the new child induction process, parents/guardians written permission for obtaining emergency medical advice or treatment is sought. Parents sign and date their written approval.
