An enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required for all adults working in the nursery, either in a paid or voluntary basis.
- Any staff/people who have not been checked must be supervised at all times. This includes volunteers, work experience people, trades people, visitors and new staff.
- Until clearance has been obtained, a new member of staff cannot be left alone with children in any area of the nursery or garden.
- Until clearance has been obtained, a new member of staff must not see to any of the children’s personal needs, such as nappy changing and toileting.
- Appropriate cover must be obtained to ensure these conditions are adhered to at all times.
Agency staff and students
- Any staff supplied by an agency or students from college must be vetted and checked by the agency or the college.
- Written confirmation must be received from all agencies and colleges, stating that, for all staff and students offered to us, they have:
- obtained DBS clearance for each individual to work with children.
- checked references and all other documentation from previous employers and ensured that no comment has at any time been made to suggest that the individual might not be a suitable person to work with children.
- validated all qualifications which the individual claims to have.
- checked for address and identity of the individual.
- The agency will also supply the name of the worker that they are sending in advance. Agency staff will be required to show photographic proof of identity.
- Photographic proof of identity will be required from representatives from any other agencies where that agency is responsible for checking their suitability, e.g. Ofsted inspectors, advisory teachers, Area SENCO.
Parents and grandparents
We welcome and encourage parents and grandparents to come to the nursery. It is an important part of our nursery ethos that they have a sense of belonging and are involved in all areas of nursery life. It is important that we balance this freedom of parental movement and involvement in our setting with our overriding duty to protect the children in our care.
- Parents/grandparents/other person with parental responsibility or authorised person must not be left unsupervised (by a member of nursery staff) in any area of the nursery or garden where any child other than their own is present.
