Research interests: Professor Marc Domingo Gygax is an ancient historian specialising in classical historiography, Greek inscriptions, and material culture. His research examines long-term structures and continuities in Greek history, drawing on approaches from historical anthropology. He has published on Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, Hellenistic history, and historical theory, including studies on the emergence of the city-state in Lycia, the origins of Greek euergetism, political leadership in Athenian democracy, and Thucydides’ philosophy of history. His current projects investigate the principles and evolution of gift-exchange in the Greek world, the exclusion and integration of non-citizens in the poleis of Hellenistic Asia Minor, and the interactions between Greek foundations and indigenous populations across the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
