Sports and chess news Hilary 2019

Wednesday 20 March

Two students and one alumna in the University Blue boats, and other sports and chess news for the term:

University rowing: Congratulations to Balliol undergraduates Leah Mitchell and Grace Joel, who have been selected for the OUWLRC Blue Boat. They will be representing Oxford at the Oxford-Cambridge Lightweight Boat Races in Henley on Saturday 30 March 2019. Charlotte Lee (cox) and William Wathey also contended for places in the University rowing boats.

Congratulations too to Eleanor Shearer (Balliol 2014), President of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club, who will be cox in the Oxford crew competing in the Boat Race on Sunday 7 April. She also raced in the 2017 Blue Boat.

You can read profiles of all three of these Balliol Blues on the BCBC website.

University chess: First-year Computer Science undergraduate Filip Mihov represented Oxford in the 137th Varsity match, at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, on 2 March 2019. Oxford won (4.5-3.5) : there are details of the match here.

University football: Four Balliol members - Josh Penollar (captain), Barnaby Graff, Joseph Fisher and Josh Goldstein - were part of the starting team for men’s University 3rd team, which won their Varsity match against Cambridge 2-0.

College rowing: The women’s boat, W1, got blades in Torpids. There are photos of Torpids on BCBC’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

College rugby: The men’s rugby team have had a very successful season with a double promotion this year. And they met the England rugby team. Some of the current Balliol team played a match against Balliol alumni, on 9 March 2019, which the ‘current boys’ won 74-51. ‘After the match,’ writes rugby captain Oliver Ralton, ’the festivities continued as we watched two of the Six Nations matches in College, went for a drink in Vinnies, went for a meal in a pub and had a social in the College bar!’
