Here is a round-up of some of the sports news from Hilary Term 2018:

Powerlifting

Postgraduate student David Wei Jia has received a Full Blue in powerlifting - his fourth Full Blue. In the 2018 Varsity match he set an all-time Oxford record in the squat for the 93kg class, performing 237.5kg.  He also has an all-time Oxford record in the squat in the 83kg class for 220kg, which was set in 2015. Congratulations to David - who is reading for a DPhil in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics - on all his achievements.

Athletics

Congratulations to the three Balliol students who achieved success at the Athletics Varsity 2018:

  • Sophie Haldane (first-year PPE undergraduate) cane second in the 400m and 200m, and won the 4x400m relay.
  • Alex Gruen (second-year Maths and Philosophy undergraduate) won the mile race. 
  • Joe Fisher (first-year Medical Sciences student) came 4th in the javelin for the Blues seconds. 

Rugby

Commiserations to the rugby team, who reached the Cuppers semi-final but lost by one point to Exeter as they scored a last-minute penalty. 

Hockey

Commiserations to the hockey team, who reached the Cuppers semi-final before losing 2-1 to St Hilda’s.
