Thursday 28 September

We congratulate Professor Martin McLaughlin (Balliol 1973) on being awarded the Serena Medal for Italian Literature by the British Academy.

The prestigious Serena Medal is awarded annually ‘for eminent services towards the furtherance of the study of Italian history, philosophy or music, literature, art, or economics’. It was endowed by Mr Arthur Serena after Great Britain’s alliance with Italy in the First World War and was first awarded in 1920. Professor McLaughlin came to Balliol in 1973 as a Snell Exhibitioner (following an MA at Glasgow) and gained a BA in classics and Italian, followed by a DPhil in Italian. Now a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, he is about to retire from his Chair as Professor of Italian Studies. His many publications are listed on his departmental web page.
