James Howarth (Acting Librarian) reports: ‘Using the 15th-century Old Library is one of the joys of studying at Balliol, but the Library has of course changed over time - the bookcases, for example, are relatively spritely, having been installed in the 1790s. This summer vacation has been marked by the arrival of 16 new desks.
‘The desks have been handmade to a bespoke design by library furniture specialists Serota, and they feature integrated lighting and power points. They complement the new Library chairs installed in 2014. We trialled the new lighting last year and it got a very enthusiastic response. Students here for the summer have already been making themselves at home at the new desks.’
The old tables (example right) are available for sale to Balliol alumni. If you are interested, please contact the Library at firstname.lastname@example.org.
