Choir tour to Sicily

Thursday 20 April

Over the Easter vacation the Balliol Choir went on a tour to Sicily, performing at concerts and in church services. ‘The tour not only fostered excellent friendship amongst the choir, but also offered a fine opportunity for the performance of a wide range of repertoire,’ says organist Edward Howell, who accompanied the choir in a programme that included Mendelssohn’s Verleih uns Frieden; Tallis’s O Nata Lux; Arcadelt’s Ave Maria; de Marzi’s Signore delle cime; Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine; Haydn’s Insanae et vanae curae; Anerio’s Christus factus est; Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditsye Dyevo; Elgar’s Ave verum corpus; Bruckner’s Locus iste; Tallis’s Dorian service; and Gibbons’ ‘Drop, drop, slow tears’.

‘It was a great pleasure to be able to accompany and direct the choir,’ Edward continues, ’and my thanks must go to Revd Bruce Kinsey, as well as to Joe Barber (Senior Organ Scholar), for their time, dedication, and musical expertise.’

Choir member James Letten recorded this video of the choir’s performance of Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine during a service at Chiesa Evangelica Valdese, Palermo, on 26 March 2017:
