This information relates primarily to use of the common spaces within the Broad Street site, Jowett Walk and the College Boathouse. Graduates using common spaces within the Graduate Centre should consult the Praefectus and the MCR Committee.
All users of the Broad Street and Jowett sites are required to abide by the College and University guidelines relating to COVID-19, including the use of face coverings. Detailed information can be obtained on the Balliol coronavirus webpage and the University coronavirus website. Hand sanitisers have been placed in many public locations around College.
Members are welcome to invite guests to socialise with them in Balliol, but please observe government guidelines for the maximum size of groups.
All non-Balliol guests are required to log their contact details for Test and Trace at the Lodge before entering any Balliol space. Non-Balliol visitors to Broad Street, Jowett, or to use the Master’s Field sports areas must be logged at the Broad Street Lodge before entry.
Visitors to the Graduate Centre should be logged at the Holywell Manor Lodge.
COVID-19 tests and symptoms
Any student, including those living outside College accommodation, who has symptoms of possible COVID-19, a positive test, or has been told by the authorities to self-isolate should inform the Lodge and other members of their household as soon as possible. Graduates should contact the Holywell Manor Lodge and undergraduates the Broad Street Lodge.
Please don’t be brave: it’s better to suspect COVID-19 and isolate for a couple of days until you are proved not to have it, than risk being positive for the virus and then passing it to many others before your test results come back.
The Library Passage and Buttery toilets on the Broad Street site are open to all. The toilets in the ground-floor area of Jowett Tower 4 are open to everyone in Jowett Walk including those using the Master’s Field.
The Library has a specific system for use during the pandemic. Those disobeying Library rules may have Library access privileges revoked for a period. The Library can also deliver books for those who don’t want to study in the Library itself: they will be left in the old JCR post shed in the Front Quad.
- Hall remains open. Takeaway meals from Hall may also be booked for lunch and dinner. See the Balliol Food page for information.
- Some of the Master’s Field sports facilities are available to College members: please book online and observe social distancing and sports risk assessments at all times. Guests may be brought in for tennis but must log their contact details at the Broad Street Lodge before arriving at Jowett.
- The College Boathouse is only available via the Boat Club with strict rules.
- Public rooms in Broad Street and Jowett will be prioritised as teaching spaces. Students wishing to book indoor spaces or the Jowett Field for social events or speaker meetings must go through a risk assessment process: please consult the Domestic Bursar.
All members of colleges should keep in mind that the aim is to avoid a spike in infections locally which stops all our activities. None of us wants to return to full lockdown again if we can avoid it. We can do that by finding the virus quickly even in those with no symptoms.
