Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls arriving at 10 Downing Street for the weekly Cabinet meeting, May 2008
The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper (1987), the Labour MP for Pontefract and Castleford, became Chief Secretary to the Treasury – the first woman to hold that Office of State – on 24 January 2008. She read PPE at Balliol and was JCR President in 1989. Her husband Ed Balls (who studied at Keble College) has been Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families since June last year. They are the first married couple to serve as Cabinet Ministers simultaneously.
