New Fund helps Physics students at Balliol

David BrinkA generous contribution from the Smart Family Foundation in the USA has enabled Balliol to establish the David Brink Fund. The income from this permanently endowed fund will be used to make grants to individual Physics students at the College, including those reading Physics and Philosophy. These grants will help Physics undergraduates and postgraduates for example to purchase books, attend conferences, buy particular items of equipment, travel to conduct research, fund publication costs, or carry out other activities related to their subject at Balliol.

The Fund is named in honour of David Brink FRS, Emeritus Fellow of the College, who was a Tutor in Physics from 1958 until he retired in 1993, and who became a Reader in Physics at the University in 1988. He also held the offices of Vice-Master (1976-78) and Senior Tutor (1989-92) at Balliol. Born in Hobart, Australia, and educated at the University of Tasmania, David Brink came to Oxford in 1951 as a Rhodes Scholar at Magdalen College, where he undertook a DPhil.

The donation from the Smart Family Foundation has come largely through the good offices of one of David Brink’s former students at Balliol, Professor A Douglas Stone (1976). Professor Stone read Physics and Philosophy at Balliol before completing a PhD at MIT, and he is now Chairman and Professor of Applied Physics at Yale University.

Speaking about the benefaction, Professor Stone comments: “I now appreciate even more than at the time the unique opportunity Balliol afforded me to learn basic physics from a world-class physicist. David Brink was an inspirational figure for me and I am pleased to be helpful in obtaining this fund which will bear his name.”

The College is delighted to have this new fund, which will be of considerable benefit to Physics students at Balliol both now and in the future. The David Brink Fund will remain open, and the College would welcome any further contributions from Old Members. This would enable the Fund to continue to grow, thus helping even more Physics students in years to come.
