Core Principles
• Balliol is passionately dedicated to the pursuit and sharing of knowledge through the highest standards of learning, scholarship, and research.
• We remain determined to provide an outstanding education for students of exceptional talent, regardless of their finances or background.
• On average, an Oxford student receives around 40 hours of intensive and personally-directed college-based tutorial teaching in three eight week terms – as well as practical classes, lab work, seminars and lectures. No other university in the world, with the possible exception of Cambridge, offers this level of close contact with senior academics. Balliol students also enjoy exceptional facilities for learning thanks to a combination of college and University provision.
• The University is adopting robust and flexible financial support arrangements (including bursaries and partial fee waivers) to ensure that an Oxford education remains affordable to all students.
• Balliol currently is one of the most generous colleges in Oxford in terms of the financial support it makes available to students. We are committed to remain so.
Balliol and the national funding context
As at other English universities:
• UK/EU students will not have to pay upfront for their tuition.
• Students will start to repay their tuition loans only after they have left higher education and are earning at least £21,000.
• Repayments will be 9% of income above £21,000, so the amount repaid each month will depend on earnings (like a tax):
Someone earning £21,500, for example – currently the salary of a newly-qualified teacher – would initially make repayments of just £4 per month. The monthly repayment would increase to £23 for someone earning £24,000 per year; £30 on a salary of £25,000; £45 on £27,000; and £68 on £30,000.
• All outstanding repayments will be written off after 30 years.
Prospects after Balliol
• Oxford undergraduates who go on to full-time jobs have a median salary that is 20% higher than the UK median six months after graduating.
