Mark Cummins (2001) and James Philbin (New College), two DPhil students from the Department of Engineering Science, have won a prize of $100,000 in a major competition run by Google. Their company, Plink Search, received the largest share of the public vote for a visual search engine called ‘PlinkArt’.

The Dawkins Prize is for outstanding research into the ecology and behaviour of animals whose welfare and survival may be endangered by human activities. It was endowed by a generous donation from the family of Professor Richard Dawkins FRS. Balliol is now seeking nominations for the fourth Prize. The Prize-winner will receive £2,000 and will be expected to give one public lecture in Oxford.
