Balliol College is very pleased to announce that it has offered the Mastership of the College to Professor Sir Drummond Bone, MA DLitt DUniv (Glas) FRSE FRSA, and he has accepted. The formal election will be in Trinity Term. Professor Bone will take up the post this October.
Sir Drummond Bone graduated from Glasgow University, and was a Snell Exhibitioner at Balliol from 1968 to 1972. He became Professor of English Literature and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Glasgow, Principal of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College in the University of London, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, and President of Universities UK.
Dr Andrew Graham, the current Master, commented: “I am delighted at the College’s choice of my successor. Higher education faces immense challenges over the next few years and Balliol is extremely fortunate to be able to appoint someone with such breadth of experience. From my knowledge of Drummond, I am certain that Balliol’s future lies in excellent hands.”
In reply, Sir Drummond remarked, “To be elected to the Mastership by such a distinguished Fellowship is an honour indeed. That it is in my own College makes it moving as well as enormously exciting. The next few years will be fraught for UK Higher Education, but Balliol is well placed to cope, and the celebration of our 750th birthday in 2013 is itself a great opportunity. I very much look forward to being part of it all.”
