The Senior Tutor/Academic Registrar may authorise the award of a special prize from time to time to a junior member reading a subject not covered by the following list:
Chemistry
Greville-Smith Prizes to a total value of £150 may be awarded annually to students reading Chemistry Part I or Part II. These are paid from the Domus Fund.
Classical Languages and Literature
The Jenkyns Exhibition, the amount of which is usually £150 for one year, renewable in certain circumstances for a second year, is awarded after an examination and is open to members of the College who are reading Literae Humaniores. This Exhibition may be divided between two or more undergraduates.
A Jenkyns Prize of £75 is awarded annually to 2nd year undergraduates reading Classical Honour Moderations.
Samuel Dubner Prizes may also be awarded to 2nd Year post-FPE students for the purpose of purchasing materials relevant to the FHS course and encouraging work towards Finals.
Economics and Management
The Kyriacou/Sherwin-Smith Prize of £250 for Economics and Management, is awarded at the end of the third year, for the best performance in Economics and Management papers in Part 1 Finals of EEM.
Engineering
A Lubbock Prize of £75 and a Prosser Prize of £50 may be awarded annually to undergraduates reading any Engineering School.
Engineering, Economics and Management
The Leonie Foong Prelims/Finals Prize of £250 is awarded for the best FPE and/or FHS performance by students reading EEM at Balliol.
English Literature
Two Elton Prizes of £75 and £50 are awarded annually to 1st and 2nd year undergraduates for proficiency in English Literature, with special reference to Shakespeare.
Two Kington Oliphant Prizes of £75 and £50 can be awarded annually for proficiency in English Philology.
History
Kington Oliphant, James Gay and Martin Wright Prizes are awarded annually for distinguished performance in Honour Moderations or in the Final Honour School. The total sum available for distribution through these prizes will not exceed an average of £300 per annum, and in awarding these prizes consideration will be given both to undergraduates reading for the Final Honour School of Modern History and to undergraduates reading Joint Honour Schools in which Modern History is a part. A Samuel Dubner Prize may be awarded to Second Year Joint or Single Honours students embarking on research for their undergraduate thesis. A further Samuel Dubner Prize of £75 is available to graduate students of History to undertake historical research. And a William Mazower Prize, founded 2011, is automatically attached to the exhibition that History tutors award to the best performing undergraduate at the end of the second year of study.
History and Science Subjects
A Roger Hall Prize of £75 can be awarded annually to a student of history or a science subject in rotation.
International Relations and History
Two Sir Raymond Beazley Prizes of £75 each (in awarding one of which preference will be given to junior members in their first year) are awarded annually to the undergraduate members of the College who shall have submitted the best essays on topics approved by the College in any one of the following fields: International History, International Political Problems, the History of Exploration and the History of Russia.
Law
A Jenkyns Prize of £300 for the best essay and a Younger Prize of £75 for the essay showing greatest improvement in the work of its author, may be awarded by the law tutors for essays written during the long vacation, on topics approved in advance by the law tutors. The essays should be 5000 to 7000 words long.
The Paton Studentship, to the value of £220 or more, is awarded annually on the result of Law Schools.
Management Studies
The Nind Prize of £75 may be awarded annually for the best performance in Management Studies, either for the Master’s degree or in an Honour School.
Mathematics
Two Prosser Prizes of £100 and £50 are awarded annually to 3rd or 4th year undergraduates reading Mathematics or one of the joint schools.
The Les Woods Memorial Prize may also be offered to students in Applied Mathematics and related subjects embarking on various academic initiatives.
Medical Sciences
Periam Prizes to a total value of £100 may be awarded annually to students reading Physiological or Medical Sciences. These are paid from the Domus Fund. Samuel Dubner Prizes of £125 each will be awarded for the highest mark in Finals achieved by a Pre-Clinical Medical student; and, in the 5th year, to the student achieving the best all-round academic and clinical performance on the Clinical course.
Modern Languages
A Brassey Prize of £75 is awarded annually to a final year undergraduate for the best essay in a modern foreign language on a subject approved by the College. Essays must be submitted by the Saturday of 3rd Week of Michaelmas Term. A Prize of up to £150 may also be awarded to a 1st year undergraduate to allow him or her to travel abroad in the vacation following the Preliminary Examination.
Oriental Studies
A Prize of up to a total value of £65 may be awarded annually to a 3rd year undergraduate reading Oriental Studies.
Philosophy
Ernest Walker Prizes for essays of about 5000 words on topics agreed with a philosophy tutor, written by a philosophy student over the long vacation immediately after their first year in residence: either three prizes at £75, two prizes at £110 or one prize at £150.
Philosophy, Politics and Economics
Two Jenkyns Prizes of £75 and £50 are awarded annually for best performance in Mock Schools. Samuel Dubner Prizes may also be awarded to First Year students.
Political Economy
Thomas Balogh or GDH Cole Prizes of £75 are awarded for essays on approved subjects in Economics and Politics.
Politics
A James Hall Prize of £100 may be awarded for an essay on an approved subject in Politics.
Physics
Conroy Prizes to a total value of £175 may be awarded annually to students reading Physics or Physics and Philosophy.
Three Ken Allen Prizes of £100 each are awarded annually for the best experimental record by a Balliol Physics student in the First, Second and Third years.
