I'm new to Oxford - how do I get set up with email?
The central Oxford University email system is called Nexus. All new University card-holders get issued with a Nexus account automatically - a letter containing the account details will be sent to you. The letter contains details on how to activate the account.
Once activated, access to Nexus is either by the Nexus 'OWA' web browser service (https://nexus.ox.ac.uk/) or via an email client such as Outlook, Windows Mail or Mac Mail - for client configuration information see http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/email/config/.
The email system is controlled by the central Computing Services (OUCS) and problems should be referred to them.
It is a College requirement that all students must check their Nexus email accounts daily - you can always forward mail from your Nexus account to your preferred email host.
How do I use the computers in the College Computer Rooms?
To log into the computers in the computer rooms use the same credentials as you use for your University Nexus email account. The computer rooms offer standard software, printing and scanners. Please consult the computing section of this website for further information. Note that printing is charged. Only Balliol junior members may have accounts on this system.
Are there any computers I can use before College Accounts are created?
Yes - there are open-access email/web terminals in the computer rooms. They are intended for checking email accounts; they are not connected to any peripherals.
Can I connect my own computer to the network?
Yes, provided you are a full member of Balliol and possess a University Card.
Every room on the main sites has a wired network socket – you need to supply your own network cable. There is no wireless system flooding College.
All you need do is to plug your computer into the wall socket in your room. You should then access the web page http://10.0.0.1 and follow the instructions*. The instructions will then guide you through the rules, regulations and take details from you. Your registration request will be processed within 5 minutes. Due to the shortage of network numbers only one computer can be registered.
* If you do not get the instructions check your computer is set to automatic IP number and DNS settings (e.g. use 'DHCP') (Click for instructions for Windows XP, for Windows Vista).
