Undergraduates and Graduates
The Dean will present Fresher undergraduates and graduates for Matriculation on the first Saturday of Michaelmas Term (and of subsequent terms). The ceremony is preceded by the Freshers' Photograph which (with the exception of Balliol returners), ALL Balliol Freshers, including those who have already matriculated and/or are incorporating are expected to attend.
Students are required to assemble in Hall at 8.00am promptly and must be wearing academic dress: for men, a dark suit, dark socks and black shoes or boots, a plain white shirt and white collar, and white bow tie; for women, a white blouse, black tie, dark skirt or trousers, black stockings, black shoes or boots and, if desired, a dark coat. Clothes should be appropriate for formal occasions. All must wear caps and gowns. New graduate students are required to wear the Oxford
graduate gown. Students who have graduate degrees from another university may wear the gown belonging to that university. They should bear in mind however that they will in due course be required to wear the Oxford graduate gown. Further information on gowns may be found in the Freedom of Speech section.
