There is no flood wireless provision in Balliol; you will not have wireless in your room.
There are however OWL wireless hot-spots in:
- The Library
- JCR
- College Office (covering Stc 10 annex and some of stc 10)
- Lecture room 23
- Staircase 21
- MCR
- Jowett 4 ground floor (covering the East side of Jowett 3)
Wireless reception can be expected within ~25m of these locations. See map.

Fast Track Details
1) One-off Step: Set yourself up with a Remote Access Account & download the ‘VPN’ software.
Visit https://register.oucs.ox.ac.uk/- log in with your Nexus credentials.
From the left-hand side select ‘>self registration’
Under Password changing options, select ‘Reset a Remote Access password’. Set up a password for remote access – it does not affect your Nexus login; you can set a completely different password. Note the time at which the password becomes active.
From the left-hand side select ‘>>software’
In the selection panel select ‘VPN Client’ and click the Submit button below. Click on the bold link for the version you require and save it to your computer, then install it on the target computer.
2) Connecting to the Wireless Network
Power your computer up within range of an OWL point (<30m) and double click on the “Wireless network Connection/ One or more wireless networks are available …” bubble which pops up. In the new window, highlight the 'OWL' network and click connect. A bubble should pop-up saying you are connected.
Run the Cisco VPN client (installed in step 1). Start/All Programs/Cisco/Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client/Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.
. You will be challenged for your Nexus username (ballxxxx) and your remote access password. After a few seconds, the login boxes should disappear and you can use the wireless network.
Notes
You are bound by the University and OUCS networking rules when using remote access and will attract disciplinary action, including fines, if you break the rules.
The OWL network is available to all full-members of the University with a Nexus Account. All the steps needed to use it are user-invoked and do not involve the Balliol Computing Department.
The performance of the OWL network falls off rapidly with distance and the number of users. It is not a good method for downloading large amounts of data. Useful connectivity appears available in the back quad in the absence of foliage.
