Printing to the College Printers

There are two high quality black and white laser printers in the Computer Suite on staircase 3 and a similar one in the Holywell Manor Computer Room. The workstations at each location print directly to those printers.

Small amounts of colour printing can be done by arrangement with the Computing Department.

The printers are not intended for mass runs of society fliers, etc. but for one-off copies of material. The former activity blocks the printers for long periods and exhausts the supplies - use a photocopier!

Printing Charges

All laser printing is charged per sheet directly to battels (hence double-sided is more economic). The charge per sheet is set at a maximum of 5p/per sheet with the following adjuncts. The first £1 of printing per term is paid for by the Senior Tutor; thereafter the number of pages is divided by the cost of consumables (toner + paper) and that price per page is actually charged to your battels. So far this has worked out at less than 65% of the advertised price, but all we guarantee is that it will not exceed the maximum charge.

Checking your Printing Charges

A "£" icon is by the clock on the task bar of the computer suites' computers allows you to see the (unadjusted) printing charges you have incurred.

Printing Refunds

College provides the paper and will not make a reduction if you use your own paper. We do not advocate using you own paper in the printer - if nothing else you cannot guarantee that your job will be the next one out. If your paper is substandard and damages the printers we may require recompense. As an example if sticky labels ruin the toner drum a replacement is ~£200.

If the printers go mad, or run out of toner and produce useless output, you should email the Computing Department and request a refund giving the circumstances.

Overcharged for Printing?

Email the Computing Department. We will check the logs and see what caused it. We generally make an adjustment to the charge depending on where the error lies.

A Printer Is Jammed?

In Balliol contact jcr.computer.officer@balliol in the first instance, then the Computing Department.
In Holywell contact mcr.computer.officer@balliol in the first instance, then the Computing Department.

A Printer Has Run Out Of Paper Or Is Printing Faintly?

(Note the 'Toner Low' message on printers is to be ignored, it is a marketing ploy by the printer manufacturer! Only when physically faint printing occurs is the toner low. Extracting then shaking the toner cartridge over a waste bin will probably revive it in an emergency).

In Balliol contact jcr.computer.officer@balliol.ox.ac.uk in the first instance, then the Computing Department. In the evenings spare reams of paper can be signed out from the Porter's Lodge. Only the Computer Officer or Computing Department can change the toner cartridges.

In Holywell fresh paper can be obtained from the Lodge. If the toner has expired take the empty cartridge to the Lodge to swap for a new one. The ordering of toner and paper is handled by Holywell. The Computing Department does not hold spare toner cartridges. Installation instructions are in the box - primarily note that there is a tape you have to pull out before installation!

Colour Printing

The Computing Department has an A4 double sided colour laser. Given the high price of toner, a price will be suggested based on the amount of colour in the copy. As a caution a full A4 page of solid colour consumes about 65p of toner. The University Computing Services has a colour printing service starting from 90p per sheet upwards.
