Library Rules

1. The library opening hours are 24/7 except in the college's Closed periods. These hours may be shortened if problems arise.

2. Use of the library is restricted to members of the College. You will need your University card, accredited by Balliol. to swipe in and out. Visitors may work in the library only with the permission of the Librarian. You must not admit non-members of Balliol to the library. You must not lend you University card to other people; this is a serious disciplinary offence, which may result in a fine and/or suspension of your library privileges.

3. Balliol members may not borrow Balliol books for the use of non-Balliol members, nor may Balliol members borrow books from other college libraries.

4. Large bags and non-work-related items (e.g. laundry, shopping, sports gear etc.) may not be brought into the library.

5. Each item you borrow must be checked out, using your University card, at the self-issue machine on the Library landing. If an item you are carrying triggers the alarm as you leave the library, you must re-enter and check out the item properly. Removing or attempting to remove material from the library without properly checking it out is regarded by the College as a serious disciplinary offence, which may result in a fine and/or suspension of your library privileges.

6. Up to ten books may be held on loan at any one time. If you need more please consult library staff. In term time the loan period is normally two weeks; renewals are usually possible unless the book has been reserved for another reader. All books borrowed during term are due back on Wednesday of 8th week. Books may be borrowed for the vacation from Monday of 8th week. All books borrowed for the vacation are due back on the Monday of first week.

7. You are liable to fines of 20p per book per day on all overdue books. Fines will be charged on battels.

8. Periodicals, reference books, law reports and dictionaries are confined to the library, as are books with large red stickers. Library staff may give permission to borrow these volumes very briefly. Bound periodicals and short-term loan books marked with yellow stickers may be checked out overnight only.

9. The cost of replacing any book you have lost or damaged may be charged to your battels. If it is one of a set you may be asked to replace the whole set. You are responsible for any book you have checked out until it is checked in or placed in the book return box. Deliberately damaging a book, library computer, or any part of the self-issue or security system is regarded as a serious offence, which may result in a fine and/or suspension of your library privileges.

10. Bottles of ink, food (including chewing gum) and drink are NOT allowed in the Library, except for bottles of water.

11. All mobile phones must be switched to SILENT before entering the library, and must not be used in the library or on the library landing.

12. Readers are reminded to observe the Health and Safety recommendations on the use of ladders and kick-steps, and other Health and Safety notices displayed in the library.

13. Readers are required to abide by the University's rules on computer use.
